Science
Encouraging and fostering excellence in the sciences in a learning environment rich with innovative areas of development combined with research elements
Sciences in Formal Education
Research Teachers: A joint initiative of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Jerusalem Municipality, with the support of the Trump Foundation, which focuses on the integration of young researchers in the natural sciences as science teachers in Jerusalem's high schools, while they continue their university research. The goal of the program is to upgrade the teaching of science in the city, exposing students to the forefront of science and young researchers as role models, with the aim of increasing the number of students specializing in high level sciences.
Urban Scientific Advantage: Eight centers of quality employing research methods are integrated into sixth and ninth grade studies throughout the year. This is a long process in which the students experience the full research process, including the selection of a research question about a natural phenomenon, asking appropriate questions, planning and conducting experiments, drawing conclusions and solving problems.
Key Experiences: Milestones in preparation for the students' experience in a complete process of scientific research and problem solving, which they conduct in ninth grade and alternately in seventh and fifth grades, in activities held in the school lab, in conjunction with activities at the Science Museum.
Advanced Labs: Advanced labs for 11th and 12th grade science students alongside exposure and introductory labs for 9th and 10th grade students at Belmonte Laboratories.
Sciences in Informal Education
Science Classes: Making science and technology accessible to the general public through "Basket of Science", an informal framework funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Enrichment Programs:
Future Female Scientists: Encouraging excellence among girls in the fields of engineering and the exact sciences, and developing a personal vision while providing tools that enable admission to the prestigious faculties of the various universities in these fields. The program is funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Jerusalem Scientific Youth Parliament: Involvement of teens in public discourse on controversial issues that express the complexities of the relationship between science, technology, ethics and society.
Neuro Youth: A half-day program in neuroscience for high school students studying 5 units of biology, held at the Hebrew University's Neuroscience Center.
Seminars: A meeting between academics and 11th and 12th grade students, who specialize in the sciences, which enriches the students with "hot" and up-to-date information on subjects on the forefront of scientific research, while at the same time giving them a sense of involvement in the scientific community.
To the topTechnology
Technology education gives students an understanding of themselves and their environment, and is centered around the assimilation of the curricula and learning skills for innovative technologies, during which students acquire practical tools and an in-depth understanding of developing entrepreneurship and innovation in a knowledge-rich environment.
Technology in Formal Education
Regional Trends
Providing answers to individual high school students who wish to specialize in technology such as the regional architecture class at the TALI High School in Beit Hinuch.
Heights: A new specialization in software engineering, aimed at realizing students' skills and abilities, as well as preparing technological reserves for the IDF, the economy and industry.
Robotics: Robotics classes in the framework of "Science Basket". Robotics competitions for high schools (FRC), elementary and junior high schools (FLL) and early childhood (Junior FLL).
Cyber: Magshimim
An informal advanced program for computer and cyber studies that provides knowledge and tools that enable a meaningful and fascinating service in the IDF's cyber units and the defense establishment, and later enables graduates to integrate into advanced high-tech industries in Israel and abroad.
Start-Tech: A unique enrichment program in the field of cyber, computers and technology, which was developed by experts who constitute the cutting edge of cyberspace in Israel. The program enables enjoyment from a direct connection to the IDF's cyber systems and valuable and interesting technological enrichment.
The Makers Project: Fostering creativity and a sense of capability among troubled teens, and exposing them to the field of green engineering and sustainable energy.
Mathematics: An education in mathematics contributes to the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in our developing reality. Mathematical learning strengthens analytical ability and develops original and creative thinking. In order to help achieve these goals, a number of up-to-date programs have been developed for the city's math teachers.
Promoting Initiatives: Assisting the promotion and realization of mathematical initiatives by teams of elementary school teachers who have innovative pedagogic ideas for improving the teaching and understanding of mathematics.
Leading Mathematics Teaching: Training offered jointly by the Ministry of Education and the Kerem Institute for teachers with a can-do attitude and/or mathematical coordinators, to guide the learning of the profession and lead learning processes based on group observation of the pedagogy of mathematics.
Professional Development in the Field of Mathematics
An urban, future program, in cooperation with the Trump Foundation, aimed at the professional development of mathematics teachers in the city, which includes a variety of courses that will be given simultaneously to the mathematics teachers.
The program will include disciplinary, pedagogic and psycho-pedagogic courses.
To the topSustainability
Sustainability
The Unit for Sustainability Education works to develop and promote educational programs on urban sustainability in kindergartens and schools among all of the city's communities. The programs expose the school community to the value of sustainability, raise awareness and promote the assimilation of a sustainable lifestyle. Some of the programs are integrated within the curriculum.
The unit deals with four main areas:
Urban Sustainability
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Tours
A glimpse behind the scenes of the city on the following subjects:
- Water in Jerusalem, for grades 4-6
- A clean Jerusalem, for grades 2-4
- The veterinary service, for grades 1-6
- Urban nature in Gazelle Valley, for grades 4-6
- Going to the city – for high school students
- Urban nature – for elementary and junior high school students
Natural Resources
- Educational programs for the intelligent use of natural resources, for grades 4-6
- Rainwater harvesting – for schools that already have rainwater harvesting systems installed
- The path of light – promoting a safe lifestyle and energy conservation
- "Don't Pass It On" – reduction of air pollution in urban areas
The Environment Close to Home
A municipal plan to introduce and adopt a public garden or natural urban site near the school, while developing involvement and responsibility for the immediate surroundings.
Placemaking
A unique program for 11th graders, in the framework of social involvement, for the planning and implementation of a small physical project in the public area.
The Garden as a Learning Space
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
An educational garden on the grounds of the kindergarten or school offers a wonderful opportunity for learning outside the classroom, which inspires curiosity, wonder, joy and creativity. The garden offers diverse learning and meaningful work for teachers and students of all ages.
We provide agricultural and pedagogical support and guidance to kindergarten and school staff (primary and secondary) with planning and setup processes.
Jerusalem Community Leading Sustainability
Joint learning and action meetings for the teachers teaching sustainability in Jerusalem's kindergartens and schools, connecting to innovative initiatives and municipal organizations dealing with sustainability.
Entrepreneurship in Sustainability – a call to teachers for proposals for educational initiatives in the field of sustainability through a "classroom" – a platform for mass nonprofit funding to support teachers' pedagogic initiatives.
Green Training and Certification
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Green certification for kindergartens or schools, by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Education, which constitutes recognition of significant implementation of the principles of sustainability and outlines actions integrating learning, lifestyle and motivation for actions that promote change in community awareness and behavior in relation to the human-environment relationship.
We provide guidance to kindergarten and school staff (elementary and secondary), in an accreditation process for "Green School".
