Northern section of Highway 60 expansion project to open next week
The 1.5-kilometer section is an important part of the new entrance to the capital
The northern section of a project to expand Highway 60, also called the "Tunnel Road", will be opened next week.
The 1.5-kilometer section is an important part of the new entrance to the capital, and serves as the main transportation artery connecting Jerusalem to Gush Etzion and the rest of the communities in the area.
The entire project is expected to be completed in 2024, a year earlier than originally planned.
A 360-meter-long bridge and a 270-meter-long tunnel have been built in the northern section. Besides the previously existing tunnels, two lanes were added in each direction, in addition to a public transportation lane that will be switched in accordance with the flow of traffic, so that in the morning it will be on the road from Gush Etzion to Jerusalem, and in the afternoon it will be on the road in the opposite direction. The public transportation lane will be opened when the entire project is finished.
The work on the project included the renovation of existing tunnels and the upgrade of the systems in the existing and new tunnels (such as ventilation, lighting, water, fire detectors and communications) to new and advanced technological systems.
The project, which is being led by the Municipality of Jerusalem and the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety, is being managed and carried out by the Moriah company.
Recently, the special initiative won the prize for the outstanding project in Israel for 2021 in the field of transportation infrastructure, a prize that was awarded to the Moriah company at the annual conference of the Association of Construction and Infrastructure Engineers, which was held at the Tel Aviv Expo.
The mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Lion, said "The project for the doubling of the Tunnel Road will significantly ease traffic, increase the level of safety, and facilitate a lighter and more comfortable traffic flow. The highway will increase access to and from Jerusalem as well as give priority to public transportation. It is yet another step toward getting Jerusalem out of the traffic jams."
The CEO of the Moriah company, Gilad Bar-Adon, said "The doubling of the Tunnel Road (Highway 60) is an engineering project of huge importance for the city of Jerusalem. We completed another stage of the project that will ease traffic and upgrade safety and the quality of travel of those entering and exiting Jerusalem. The Moriah company is proud to take part in such a significant way in the establishment of this important project."
