Build your Sukkah safely
The Municipality of Jerusalem welcomes and is happy to promote the building of sukkahs on the grounds of public spaces.
Due to a desire to allow such building as much as possible, and to ensure that the sukkahs are safe, secure, stable and accessible to the public, the Municipality established an administrative team in its Enforcement and Policing Division, in cooperation with other municipal bodies, including the City Engineer, the Operations Administration, and the Municipal Prosecution, to review and provide temporary permits for sukkahs in public spaces.
The Municipality of Jerusalem is working to regulate the establishment of sukkahs in public spaces before the upcoming holiday season.
The regulation of the construction of sukkahs is carried out under the guidance of the Municipal Prosecution, together with the City Engineer and the deputy director of operations, and in full cooperation with the Enforcement and Policing Division and the Licensing and Supervision Division.
As part of the regulation, the Enforcement and Policing Division appointed a chief coordinator who will receive applications from businesses and other entities interested in erecting sukkahs. In addition, regulations detailing the various safety requirements for sukkah construction have been established in coordination with the Israel Police. Upon receiving an application for a permit, the relevant officials will provide the applicant with guidance to ensure that the sukkah meets the criteria and is neither a hazard to those who enter it, nor a disturbance to the public.
This initiative is to promote dialogue with the communities and business owners in the city, with an aim of enabling, as much as possible, the establishment of sukkahs for the use and welfare of the public, while ensuring the safety and security of all users of the public space. Along with regulating the issue, the Municipality will operate a special task force that will take action in real time against any unsafe sukkahs established throughout the city.
Please note that even on the grounds of private homes, the building of sukkahs on raised platforms is not allowed. There will be strict and immediate enforcement action against any obstruction of public spaces and/or construction of sukkahs on raised platforms.
