UP 60+ Jerusalem

A new guidance and development center for people 60 years and older who are retiring from the workforce

“I was forced to retire,” 67-year-old Naomi told me. “I looked forward this moment with mixed emotions. I’m used to walking to the office, meeting my workmates and managing my day. That’s what I did for 30 years. I feel that a great void has been formed in my life, and I’m not certain I know how to fill it. I always thought that upon retiring I would spend every day celebrating, I’d travel the world and do anything I felt like doing. Today I understand that I need to stop and plan well for the coming decades.”

Naomi, you’re not alone!

Every day, the staff of the UP60+ center at 53 HaPalmach Street meets people coping with the challenges of retirement and provides them with tailored solutions through the professional staff.

The expected changes and increased life expectancy lead to an extension of life after retirement from the workforce. This event constitutes one of life’s major and most significant transitions. For many people, work is a central and important component of their lives. The day a person stops working on a regular basis, they are faced with a new challenge: finding alternative sources that will provide them with a sense of value, belonging and importance.

Many senior citizens enter the retirement period with mixed emotions. They are concerned with many questions: How do you build a meaningful new daily routine? How do you manage financially? What do you do in your free time? Who can you consult with?

Recognition of the unique needs of the 60+ population of retirees led to the creation of a tailored solution: The establishment of a municipal guidance and growth center for people before and after retirement. The center was established at the initiative of the Ministry of Social Equality, JDC-Eshel, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Ginot Ha’ir Community Council. The center provides personal and group services to any resident reaching retirement and starting the new phase of their life.

Everyone contacting the center is invited to a personal meeting by the training staff, where they are exposed to a variety of tailored services and programs offered by the UP60+ center: A workshop for planning the new stage of life, personal training, a workshop for designing a healthy lifestyle, computer and smartphone courses, financial management courses and guidance for municipal solutions for employment, volunteer work, leisure activities and benefits.
