Cleaning the City from Air Pollution

The Cleaning the City from Air Pollution project, headed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Jerusalem Municipality, aims to reduce air pollution from vehicles which affects pedestrians and residents of Jerusalem.

The project is part of the plan for reducing air pollution from transportation in Jerusalem. To that end, a municipal bylaw has been enacted which prohibits the use of polluting vehicles within the city unless they have been fitted with an air pollution-reducing filter.

In the first phase of the plan, starting in January 2020, Jerusalem’s city center will be defined as a low- emission zone and diesel vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons and registered in 2005 or earlier will be prohibited from entering this area. Vehicles fitted with a particulate filter will be allowed to enter this area.

Phase One Starting in January 2020, commercial diesel vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons and registered in 2005 or earlier which have not been fitted with a particulate filter for reducing air pollution will be prohibited from entering the city center. (Please note – The streets delimiting the clean zone are also prohibited for use by polluting vehicles) >>> Link to map

Phase Two – Starting in July 2020, the ban will also apply to all diesel vehicles whose vehicle license designates them as polluting vehicles, unless they have been fitted with a particulate filter for reducing air pollution. In the second phase (starting in July 2020), entrance will be forbidden to all areas of the city of Jerusalem.

Please note!

  • Enforcement will begin February 1, 2020. Check if your vehicle is designated as a polluting vehicle –At the following link (in Hebrew)>>
  • Starting July 1, 2020 (Phase Two) the ban will be extended to include all areas of the city of Jerusalem, and will apply to all diesel vehicles whose vehicle license designates them as polluting vehicles and have not been fitted with a particulate filter for reducing polluting emissions.
