Mayor's Greetings
Message of the Mayor of Jerusalem to the Public on the Occasion of the Visit of President George W. Bush

The Municipality of Jerusalem has been busy with preparations for the upcoming visit of President Bush.

Such a visit by the President of the United States occurs only once every few years and we
in the Municipality are in the midst of preparations.

Jerusalem, as the capital of Israel and a city of universal historic and cultural significance, always attracts international attention. During the three days of this visit, however, such scrutiny will be especially intense.

The Municipality has, therefore, set up a special team to plan and coordinate with other government bodies (the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Police etc.) the necessary efforts to make this visit a success.

The streets will be decorated with the flags of Israel, the United States and the City of Jerusalem. A special effort is being made to tidy up the streets.

We will be making an extra effort to keep the public and our visitors informed of changes in traffic patterns and alternative routes in order to keep inconvenience to a minimum. Our goal is to allow the normal ebb and flow of daily life with as little disruption as possible. Thus, President Bush will be coming to Jerusalem by helicopter, in order not to disrupt traffic into and out of the city.

Such a visit by so important a personage naturally causes a certain amount of inconvenience for the general public. I am certain, however, that the residents of Jerusalem, who are known for their hospitality, will see this as an opportunity to take pride and show our beautiful city not only to our special visitors but also to the entire world who will be watching.

During the visit, we will be operating a special international media center in City Hall. Television and radio teams will be able to use this center to report to their home stations and to broadcast ''live'' on the events of President Bush's visit. We view the work of the press as especially important and the Municipality will make a special effort to ensure that the media center functions with maximal efficiency.

This visit by the President of the United States is an event of national and international significance. I am certain that my fellow Jerusalemites will all do their part to help make it a success.

I wish to take this opportunity to greet President Bush with the traditional blessing of King David, the founder of Jerusalem: May God bless you from Zion and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

Uri Lupolianski
Mayor of Jerusalem
