The Sultan’s Pool, which forms part of the Hinnom Valley flanking Mount Zion on the west and the south. This pool most likely had its beginnings in the time of Herod, and some authorities identify it with the Snake Pool mentioned by Josephus. Herod, who built his palace south of the Citadel reservoir nearby. The pool was formed by building a dam across the Hinnom Valley to the south, along which the road below passes. In this it resembles other ancient pools in Jerusalem which made use of natural water courses.
